One of the sources stated that the killings at Tyo Akosu settlement were perpetrated by unknown armed men who stormed a drinking spot in the village and opened fire on unsuspecting customers at the bar.

He said he could not readily confirm if the attack at Tyo Akosu was an extension of the Chito fight but noted that the suspicion among the locals was that the supremacy fight was fast spreading in the communities of the LGA.

One of the sources explained that “it all started Friday afternoon during a fight for supremacy between kingpins of crime in Ukum LGA. They are known as Chain and Full Fire gangs with their operational base located in the LGA.

“Both of them are looking for each other’s necks. Full FIre employed the services of another banditry group to help kill the Chain gang who got wind of the plan and laid ambush for them.

“They opened fire and killed all of them. Some persons claimed that 10 pereons were killed in the bloody fight while others said they counted 15 bodies.

“But it was an internal fight for supremacy among gangs and not a communal crisis. In fact, the locals ran away because they feared for their lives. They feared that in the course of the reprisal, they might be affected despite being innocent.”

It was gathered that after the Chito bloody fight on Friday evening, a gang of unknown armed men Saturday evening stormed the drinking spot at Tor Akosu village and opened fire on the customers at the bar killing seven persons and injuring several others.

Luis Diaz came off the bench to salvage a point for Liverpool with a stoppage-time goal at Luton in his first match since his parents were kidnapped in Colombia.

Diaz’s father remains missing, and the forward lifted his shirt to show a message of “freedom for papa” after heading in Harvey Elliott’s cross five minutes into added time.

He last featured in a Liverpool squad 10 days ago, but manager Jurgen Klopp said before this match that Diaz “wanted to be part of the team”.

His goal was a poignant and remarkable conclusion to a contest in which Luton had appeared on course for a deserved first league win of the season at Kenilworth Road and a first victory over the Reds since 1991.

Substitute Tahith Chong sparked wild celebrations among the home fans, who were eyeing a famous result after he steered in Issa Kabore’s cross at the climax of a superb counter-attack with 10 minutes of the regulation 90 remaining.

Until Diaz denied Luton the win, Rob Edwards’ well organised and athletic side largely frustrated Liverpool, for whom Darwin Nunez had a day to forget in front of goal.

The Uruguay forward went closest to breaking the deadlock with a dipping first-half shot that clipped the Hatters’ crossbar. He was unable to convert several other opportunities and glaringly blazed over after Mohamed Salah nodded the ball to him in the six-yard box.

The result leaves Klopp’s side third in the table, three points behind leaders Manchester City, while Luton have climbed out of the bottom three to 17th due to their superior goal difference over Bournemouth.

Luton put Liverpool off their stride

Liverpool arrived in Bedfordshire searching for their fifth consecutive win in all competitions, but only Diaz’s late intervention spared them an embarrassing defeat against their unfancied opponents.

While Liverpool’s summer outlay on players was around £150m, Luton spent in the region of £20m reinforcing their squad after completing a lengthy journey back to the English top flight.

Relegated from the First Division the season before the Premier League was founded in 1992, they went on to spend five years as a non-league club.

However, there was little to choose between the sides at times, with Luton’s greater endeavour nullifying their opponents’ obvious quality on the ball.

The Reds enjoyed plenty of possession and had 24 shots, but only six were on target and they appeared short of inspiration and efficiency in the final third until Elliott was introduced.

Had Diogo Jota stroked in an early chance it may have altered the complexion of the match, but he saw his hurried effort saved at the near post by Thomas Kaminski.

Only three of Nunez’s nine efforts were on target, while Cody Gakpo flicked wide from another Elliott delivery from the right.

Klopp will also be concerned by the way Luton carved out openings, with Trent Alexander-Arnold struggling to contain Republic of Ireland winger Chiedozie Ogbene.

Ogbene surged past the England full-back during the first half to tee up Kabore and ghosted away from him and Ibrahima Konate in the second period to cut the ball back to Carlton Morris, who was denied by the onrushing Alisson.

The Brazilian keeper was unable to prevent Chong from finishing a move that started with a Liverpool corner, but Diaz was on hand to salvage a point for the Reds despite the ordeal he and his family are going through.

Mikel Arteta slams ’embarrassing’ and ‘disgraceful’ Newcastle goal as Arsenal suffer Premier League defeat

Mikel Arteta has described the controversial decision to award Newcastle’s winning goal against Arsenal as “disgraceful” and “embarrassing”.

Anthony Gordon’s goal survived a triple VAR check with Arsenal arguing the ball had gone out of play in the build-up and Gabriel was then pushed in the back.

Claims for an apparent offside were also not upheld after VAR deemed they could not determine the moment of contact when the ball was passed to Gordon.

“It’s a disgrace,” Arteta told Sky Sports. “It’s embarrassing. That’s how I feel and that’s how everybody feels in that [dressing] room. You cannot imagine the amount of messages we’ve got saying this cannot continue. It’s embarrassing. I’m sorry, embarrassing.”

The Arsenal manager added: “I feel sick. That’s how I feel. I feel sick to be part of this. It is not good enough and we cannot accept that.”

Gordon’s goal condemned the Gunners to their first Premier League defeat of the season.

Newcastle boss Eddie Howe, perhaps predictably, saw matters rather differently. “It looked a good goal to me,” he said. Had the goal been ruled out, Newcastle would have ended the match with an XG of 0.3.

Jeremy Doku stole the show with a goal and four assists as Manchester City cruised to a 6-1 win over Bournemouth to record their fourth straight win in all competitions.

The Belgian winger opened the scoring with a stunning curled finish from the edge of the box, before laying on goals for Bernardo Silva and Manuel Akanji as the champions hit three goals in seven first-half minutes.

Doku’s heroics came as Erling Haaland was taken off at half-time after limping down the tunnel as the whistle went. But his replacement Phil Foden was the beneficiary of another Doku assist as he finished just after the break.

Luis Sinisterra scored his first Bournemouth goal in a consolation to make it 4-1 – but Bernardo added a fifth when he ran through and chipped Radu from another Doku pass, before former Cherries defender Nathan Ake got in on the act late on.

Asked about the severity of Haaland’s injury, Guardiola confirmed the forward had twisted his ankle – but could not confirm the severity of the injury.

“He twisted a little bit his ankle, hopefully it is not a big issue. We will look in the next hours,” said Guardiola.

Arsenal ended Manchester City’s unbeaten start to the Women’s Super League season with a third successive victory.

Substitute Stina Blackstenius scored a late winner at Meadow Park, capitalising on a mistake from 19-year-old goalkeeper Khiara Keating, after Chloe Kelly’s equaliser had cancelled out Steph Catley’s opener.

Jonas Eidevall’s Arsenal side are starting to find their form and have given their title hopes a boost after a slow start to the season which saw them lose to Liverpool, before drawing with Manchester United.

Manchester City had arrived in London in impeccable form but after a bright start, found themselves trailing thanks to a superb opener from Catley, who struck her effort powerfully into the far corner after nice build-up play from Arsenal.

That swung the momentum in Arsenal’s favour and they were awarded a penalty minutes later when Cloe Lacasse was brought down by young goalkeeper Keating.

But Kim Little’s spot-kick was pushed on to the post by Keating to keep City in contention, and they came close to an equaliser before half-time when Lauren Hemp’s header hit the crossbar and was cleared off the line by defender Amanda Ilestedt.

City came out with intent again after the break and last season’s top-scorer Khadija Shaw remained a threat.

She was unmarked when she was set up by a curling cross from Hemp but headed off the post from close range. The equaliser eventually arrived when Shaw teed up Kelly in the box and she struck a low effort past goalkeeper Manuela Zinsberger.

The game remained in the balance in the final minutes but Blackstenius made the most of a long ball forward, which was misjudged by Keating, and slotted in a crucial winner.

There was a lengthy delay afterwards as medical staff attended to an emergency in the stands before Arsenal’s win was confirmed, putting their campaign right back on track.

Arsenal’s season back on track as City falter

Pressure had been mounting on manager Eidevall after Arsenal were knocked out of the Women’s Champions League qualifying rounds, before their defeat by Liverpool at the Emirates Stadium on the opening day of the WSL season.

But this result, their third straight win in the league, could prove to be a catalyst as they look to make up the early ground they lost in the title race.

“I was a little surprised before the game because it was like we were being portrayed as the underdogs,” said Arsenal manager Eidevall.

“In my experience here, we won three times out of three while I’ve been manager against Manchester City. I think that’s a very strong record against Manchester City.”

City started like a side full of confidence but as chances came and went in the opening 10 minutes, Arsenal began to settle and found the big breakthrough with Catley’s goal.

From that moment on, Arsenal had the upper hand in the first half, before City bounced back in the second half. It could have gone either way but Arsenal capitalised on the big moments when they arrived.

These games between the WSL’s traditional top four often have a heavy impact on league standings at the end of the season and Arsenal played with a tenacity in the second half which showed they knew they could not afford to lose.

“The first 15 minutes stressed me out. I don’t think anyone planned to lose the ball in the way we did,” added Eidevall.

“So no, it didn’t go to plan. I’m happy the players could cope. We spoke a lot about having a holistic performance.

“We said [tactics] was one part of football but it is also running, duelling, fighting for inches and football is about having mental strength – when you fail once to try again next time.

“In order to beat a team like Manchester City you needed to do both – and we did. We weren’t perfect in any of them but I think we were good enough in both of them.”

City, without key injured centre-back Alex Greenwood, showed their attacking threat on numerous occasions but were sloppy in possession in midfield.

Individual mistakes proved costly, particularly the late error from promising young keeper Keating, who was comforted by team-mates as she left the pitch in tears.

“Keating will be OK. It’s part and parcel of football. I’ve said to you guys [there might] be a moment when she’ll make a mistake, and this won’t be the last one,” said City boss Gareth Taylor.

“It’s the same for all players but she’s done so many good things and she will continue to be great. I think it’s unfortunate, but it’s all good learning for her. That makes you as a player. She’ll come through it and we’ll support her in the right way.”

Diaz could return for Luton clash

Jurgen Klopp has confirmed Luis Diaz is back in training ahead of Liverpool’s trip to Luton on Sunday.

The Colombian winger has missed the Reds’ last two games following the kidnapping of his parents, with his father having yet to be found.

Klopp said: “He was in training two days ago. He had a session yesterday and will be part of the team. We must wait. If he feels right, he will be here and train with us.

“The session he had with us, because then we were not here, you could see that when he’s with the boys, it’s fine, it’s OK.

Arsenal want ‘urgent’ PGMOL action on refereeing after Newcastle VAR controversy

Arsenal have called for “urgent” action on refereeing standards as the club backed Mikel Arteta’s comments following the 1-0 Premier League defeat at Newcastle.

Gunners boss Arteta said the decision to allow Newcastle’s goal was “embarrassing” and a “disgrace”.

Three areas around Anthony Gordon’s goal were checked by the video assistant referee.

Arsenal said players, coaches and supporters all “deserve better”.

A club statement read: “Arsenal wholeheartedly supports Mikel Arteta’s post-match comments after yet more unacceptable refereeing and VAR errors on Saturday evening.

“The Premier League is the best league in the world with the best players, coaches and supporters, all of whom deserve better.

“PGMOL urgently needs to address the standard of officiating and focus on action which moves us all on from retrospective analysis, attempted explanations and apologies.

“We support the ongoing efforts of chief refereeing officer Howard Webb and would welcome working together to achieve the world-class officiating standards our league demands.”

Gordon bundled in the only goal of the match and the VAR then checked on three counts – to see if the ball went out of play in the build-up, if there was a foul and if there was an offside – with all coming back in Newcastle’s favour.
