US strikes Iran-linked sites in Syria amid fears Israel-Hamas war could escalate

Defence secretary says strikes in response to attacks on US troops and warns others against triggering ‘broader regional conflict’

The US military has launched airstrikes on two locations in eastern Syria linked to Iran’s Revolutionary Guard Corps (IRGC), signalling a new willingness in Washington to engage its forces directly in the crisis in the Middle East.

The strikes, which the Pentagon said hit a weapons storage facility and an ammunition storage facility used by the IRGC and militia it backs, were the first such US military intervention since war broke out between Hamas and Israel on 7 October.

US facilities in Iraq and Syria have been hit by a series of low-level attacks by drones and rockets over the past 10 days that have been claimed by Iran-backed militia, amid growing fears that the Hamas-Israel war could escalate into a regional conflict.

The attacks have injured at least 24 US servicemen and the death of one civilian contractor. There were three such attacks on Thursday, striking two US bases in Syriaand one in western Iraq.

Experts told the Guardian this week there was “a limit to patience” in Washington and that the administration of President Joe Biden would probably seek to deter with force any further attacks despite the risk of escalation.

Biden has already ordered two aircraft carriers to the eastern Mediterranean and sent new anti-missile units with hundreds of troops to protect US bases and allies in the region.

The US retaliatory strikes were carried out by two F-16 fighter jets at about 4.30am on Friday near Abu Kamal, a Syrian town on the border with Iraq, where the US has a major base that has been the target of several recent attacks by Iran-backed militia. It was unclear if Iranian nationals were killed.

The US defence secretary, Lloyd Austin, described “self-defence strikes” and said Biden had directed the tailored strikes “to make clear that the United States will not tolerate such attacks and will defend itself, its personnel, and its interests”.

US officials said they did not coordinate the strikes with Israel, and Austin said the operation was separate and distinct from Israel’s war against Hamas. He added: “We continue to urge all state and non-state entities not to take action that would escalate into a broader regional conflict.”

A week ago, a US warship intercepted missiles fired by Iran-backed Houthi rebels in Yemen, possibly at Israel.

The recent attacks on the US have been claimed by groups either directly controlled by Tehran or sharing the ideology of other groups fighting Israel. On Thursday, a US base at Kharab al-Jir in Syria was attacked for the second time in two days, and a base in western Iraq was also hit.

Iran’s foreign minister, Hossein Amir-Abdollahian, said at the UN on Thursday that if Israel’s offensive against Hamas did not stop, the US would “not be spared from this fire”.

Charles Lister, the director of the Syria and countering terrorism and extremism programmes at the Middle East Institute in Washington, said the attacks showed Iranhad an extensive network of well-armed, aggressive and well-coordinated proxies across the region, “which it has established for exactly this scenario”.

He added: “They are currently testing redlines but not pushing too hard. They are putting the onus on the US to respond.”

The US is in a delicate situation. It wants to hit Iranian-backed groups suspected of targeting the US as strongly as possible to deter future aggression, while also trying to avoid inflaming the region and provoking a wider conflict.https://interactive.guim.co.uk/uploader/embed/2023/10/syria_iraq_strikes/giv-13425o38Ob1eMbSGc/

One Iraq-based and Iran-supported group, believed to be a front for the long-established Kata‘ib Hezbollah, last week issued a statement threatening attacks on US military bases in the UAE and Kuwait. Paramilitaries from militia in Syria that are controlled by Iran have been deployed close to the Golan Heights, in a further threatening move.

On Wednesday, leading officials of the three principal Islamist extremist groups at war with Israel met in Beirut to discuss the conflict.

After the meeting, a brief statement said Hezbollah’s leader, Hassan Nasrallah, had agreed with Hamas’s Saleh al-Arouri and Palestinian Islamic Jihad’s leader, Ziyad al-Nakhalah, that the three – along with other Iran-backed militants – wanted to achieve “a real victory for the resistance in Gaza and Palestine” and halt Israel’s “treacherous and brutal aggression against our oppressed and steadfast people in Gaza and the West Bank”.

Explaining that it was the core of the food and agriculture delivery compacts from the Dakar 2 Summit held earlier this year in Dakar, Senegal, the AfDB President said, “We are investing heavily in the development of SAPZs to support the development of agricultural value chains, food processing and value addition, enabling infrastructure and logistics to promote local, regional, and international trade in food.

“The African Development Bank Group is investing $853 million in the development of the Special Agro-Industrial Processing Zones, and it has mobilised additional co-financing of $661 million, for a total commitment of $1.5 billion. We are deploying effective partnerships at scale. We are currently implementing 25 Special Agro-industrial Processing Zones in 13 countries.

“For example, the African Development Bank, Islamic Development Bank, and the International Fund for Agricultural Development provided $520 million for the development of eight special agro-industrial processing zones in Nigeria. The second phase of the program aims to mobilise an additional $1 billion to deliver special agro-industrial processing zones in 24 States of Nigeria”.

The federal government has formulated a plan to securitize approximately $7 billion in dividends derived from the Nigerian Liquefied Natural Gas (NLNG).

ThisDay reports that an official at NLNG gave this revelation on Thursday, October 26.

The source says that the Tinubu-led administration anticipates receiving the $7 billion through a consortium led by Standard Chartered Bank in the coming week.

Additionally, the federal government expects to receive inflows from a $3 billion emergency loan secured by the Nigerian National Petroleum Company Limited (NNPCL) from the African Export-Import Bank (Afreximbank) on August 16.

This combined inflow, expected in the short term, amounts to $10 billion.

The organization and execution of this plan are overseen by the Federal Ministry of Finance Incorporated, which holds shares in the NLNG.

This initiative aligns with the recent announcement by the Minister of Finance and Coordinating Minister of the Economy, Mr. Wale Edun, who stated that the country is poised to receive approximately $10 billion in the near future.null

These funds are expected to play a crucial role in addressing the foreign exchange (FX) backlog and contributing to the stabilization of the national currency, the naira.

Quoting an NLNG source, Thisday wrote:

  • “NLNG has been performing and used to pay dividends of about $6 billion, but because our oil production and gas production have fallen, dividends also fell to about $2 billion. But what this government has decided to do is to securitize these dividends over a period and use it to borrow money to curb the depreciation of the naira against the dollar.
  • “The target is to boost dollar liquidity by flooding the market with dollar supply and try to push the naira/dollar exchange rate to about N800/$. So, by next week, they may get $7 billion from the Standard Chartered Bank consortium and get the $3 billion from Afreximbank, under the agreement reached with NNPCL.
  • “At the same time, the government is making serious efforts to ramp up oil production significantly. The idea is to use the entire $7 billion to settle some old FX forward obligations and reduce pressure on the naira, improve liquidity and allow the currency to appreciate.”

What you should know

The Federal Government has plans to increase oil production through two fundamental objectives: ensuring security in the oil-producing areas of the Niger Delta where crude oil theft has become rife and development initiatives in the Niger Delta.

These goals, when achieved, will increase investments in the oil sector from the private sector.

Earlier today, the naira experienced a significant increase in value, strengthening by N166 against the U.S. dollar in the Peer-to-Peer (P2P) market.

This shift in the exchange rate reflects a change in the strategies employed by currency traders.

Meanwhile, on Thursday evening, the naira reached a peak exchange rate of N1279 to the U.S. dollar. However, on Friday morning, it had settled at N1113 per dollar.

Insights from various markets indicate that this rise in the naira’s value might be attributed to a lack of buyers willing to transact at the higher rate of around N1300 per dollar.

It appears that some individuals are refraining from purchasing at this rate, anticipating a potential strengthening of the local currency.

Consult Atiku, Obi’s blueprints to tackle Nigeria’s challenges – S’West SDP urges Tinubu

The Social Democratic Party (SDP) has advised President Bola Ahmed Tinubu to seek Alhaji Atiku Abubakar and Mr Peter Obi’s blueprints to expedite nation-building process.

null

The South-West Zonal Secretary of SDP, Mr Femi Olaniyi, gave the advice in an interview with the News Agency of Nigeria (NAN), on Friday in Lagos, after the Supreme Court judgment on Thursday.

Olaniyi noted that Tinubu needed ideas from his challengers to bring hope to the Nigerian masses.

While congratulating Tinubu, he said with adequate counsels, Nigeria of everyone’s dreams would be realised.

“There is no time for excuses at all. Tinubu should start welcoming more ideas, in fact, from all serious contestants for the number one seat in the country.

“The President should seek advice and ideas from Atiku Abubakar of PDP and Mr Peter Obi of LP, since they both wanted to rule because of the suffering masses and to reshape the country,” he said.

null

Olaniyi, however, urged Atiku and Obi, in the nation’s interest, to be ready to lend Tinubu ideas that would make Nigeria compete well in the comity of nations.

“We should forget politics now as true leaders and citizens. Election has come and gone and the apex court has given its verdict.

”All the presidential aspirants should work together and be part of this government for the sake of the future of this country.

null

“It is not compulsory for them to be directly part of Tinubu’s government but with ideas and advice, a new story can be written of Nigeria soon,” he said.

He also urged all stakeholders to see the project of Nigeria as everyone’s business and not President Tinubu’s alone.

According to him, with the apex court verdict, all issues affecting governance and policy-making have now been resolved.

null

“Now that Tinubu has his mandate secured fully, he should run and make economy bounce back and reduce inflation.

“There is much relief for him (Tinubu) to squarely focus on governance and nation-building. This is now the time for the president to buckle up,” he said.

The Supreme Court on Thursday dismissed the appeals made by the presidential candidates of Peoples Democratic Party, Alhaji Atiku Abubakar, and Mr Peter Obi of the Labour Party (LP), challenging Tinubu’s victory in the Feb. 25 election.

The Supreme Court, in the lead verdict delivered by Justice John Okoro, affirmed the election of Tinubu as Nigeria’s president in the 2023 general election. (NAN)

The Lagos State government yesterday resumed the demolition of illegal structures built on canals and drainage setbacks at the Ikota drainage channel in Lekki.null

This was revealed in a post on X (Twitter) by the spokesperson of the Lagos State Ministry of the Environment, Kunle Adeshina.

He wrote: “LASG resumed the removal of structures on the drainage setback of Lekki 2-Ikota channel to totally reclaim the setback.

The state government in its bid to stop the perennial flooding witnessed in the area on October 14 began the demolition of houses built on the drainage channel. The exercise has seen many residents homeless after their properties were demolished.

The state government added that it will not be compensating the owners of the demolished structures because they were duly informed that their houses were obstructing the free flow of rainwater into the drainage systems.
